The U-48 submarine was commissioned in the Kriegsmarine on April 22, 1939, and conducted 12 operational patrols during World War II. Under the command of Herbert Schultze, Hans Rösing and Heinrich Bleichrodt, it became the most effective submarine of the conflict - in terms of tonnage and number of units sunk - sinking 52 units with a total tonnage of over 300,000 tons.
